Nick Hellyar is a Houston small business owner, civic leader and longtime advocate for responsive local government. As the founder of a successful real estate company serving the Houston area, he has spent more than fifteen years helping residents navigate housing, neighborhoods and the challenges that come with living in a rapidly growing city. Through his work, Nick has built a reputation for solving problems, helping neighbors and making city systems work for the people who rely on them.
Nick moved to Houston soon after being born in London. He attended Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School. His interest in public service began early when his sixth grade social studies teacher, Jim Henley, ran for Congress and encouraged former students to become involved in the democratic process. That experience sparked a lifelong commitment to civic engagement and community service.
Nick went on to work on several successful city and state political campaigns and later served in the offices of elected officials at Houston City Hall and the Texas House of Representatives, where he managed constituent services and worked directly with residents to resolve issues affecting their daily lives. From fixing neighborhood infrastructure problems to helping families navigate city departments, Nick learned firsthand that effective government begins with listening to residents and responding quickly when problems arise.
In addition to his professional work, Nick has remained deeply involved in Houston’s civic life. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Houston Zoo, the Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park and the Astrodome Conservancy. Through these roles, he has worked to preserve Houston’s history, support cultural institutions and strengthen the civic fabric that makes the city unique.
Having served as Chief of Staff for a Houston City Council Member on an interim basis in 2025, he is ready to hit the ground running and will not need on-the-job training.
Nick believes city government should be practical, responsive, and focused on the everyday concerns of residents. His priorities include improving infrastructure, supporting public safety, preserving neighborhood character, and ensuring that city services work efficiently for everyone who calls Houston home.
“Helping people fix the issues that affect their daily lives is what I love most,” Nick says. “That passion for solving problems and serving neighbors is what drives me to run for City Council.”
